I love making this on chilly days when I need something warm and hearty to start my day. The bananas add natural sweetness, while the nuts give it that perfect bit of texture. It’s quick to whip up, easy to customize, and feels like a little bowl of comfort.
When I have bananas that are getting close to being too ripe, this stovetop banana nut oatmeal recipe is my go-to.
It’s a way to use up those sweet, soft bananas and turn them into something delicious. Another reason why I love this recipe is because there is no white or brown sugar. That’s right, pure and natural honey is used and pairs with the bananas beautifully.

No refined sugar, use natural honey
Honey is a wonderful choice for this recipe. It complements the natural flavors of the banana and nuts with its rich, floral notes. A drizzle of honey over the top just melts into the oats. My favorite!

Instructions for stovetop banana nut oatmeal
- Cut the banana in half. Mash one half for the recipe and cut the other half into slices for the topping.
- In a saucepan, add the milk, oats and and the mashed banana. Bring to a boil and turn it down to right away so that the milk does not boil over.
- Put the heat down so that it’s simmering and cook for about 5 minutes stirring occasionally.
- Check the consistency of your oats, add more milk if you want your porridge more creamy instead of thick.
- Cook for another 2 minutes and then add in the honey, vanilla and sea salt and give it a final stir.
- Top off with the diced sliced banana, pecans and a sprinkling of cinnamon.
To make this breakfast even more creamy, you can also add some yogurt or heavy cream to your bowl right before digging in. A little extra drizzle of honey on top ties it all together, making every bite creamy, sweet, and absolutely perfect! This is one of my favorite recipes to make.
